Although the new Nissans, new Commodores and Allan Moffat's Eggenberger Sierra were rumoured to appear at Winton, the only new car that materialised was Robbie Francevic's ex-Wolf Sierra. Longhurst heads home early after several engine failures, while Larry Perkins drags the old VL up into 3rd on the grid, behind another Johnson-Bowe front row. Bowe makes a bad start, letting Perkins sneak into 2nd. Perkins crashes into Johnson after a botched passing move halfway around the first lap, eliminating both cars. Bowe moves into the lead with Miedecke challenging, but the OXO car soon heads to the pits with turbocharger problems - the result of Miedecke Motorsports lack of sponsorship money. Bowe races on to his first ATCC race win, while Bond holds off Richards for second. Tragedy strikes when Tony Hunter's Commodore suffers a wheel failure at mid-distance, the loose wheel bounding into a spectator area and killing a young girl. (William Dale Jr/www.ten-tenths.com) |
