Mount Panorama: one of the treats the new WTCC had in store. Australia was convinced they would teach the Europeans a lesson, but from the first practice it was clear that the Sierras were the quickest cars here - though the Australians had a few Sierras as well.
Alfa Romeo had withdrawn from the WTCC, except the tiny Alfa 33. The Australians had some surprises in store: advertisement on the roof and windows was forbidden and they insisted on a standing start, unlike any other WTCC race. Both Ford and BMW feared the clutches wouldn’t stand the power.
In practice, Bathurst’s laws were illustrated; two Schnitzer cars were destroyed by Stermitz and Ravaglia, though the cars were repaired in time. But that was not the only BMW problem. In the race, Oestreich/Ravaglia were taken out by a Holden, after two hours valve troubles. Pirro came in after 14 laps with electrical problems, then the clutch failed. Vogt’s Bigazzi BMW damaged a wheel in warmup, then the gear linkage broke. Cecotto/Brancatelli were third for a long time, then lost a lap when they pitted during a pace car period. In the rain, Cecotto collided with a wall, and the second CiBiEmme car went off at the same time.
The Eggenberger Sierras however didn’t have problems and led the race with ease, while Rouse, having stints in the lead as well, retired with a broken transmission. Another one to go with the Eggenbergers was Miedecke, but his electrics failed; Dick Johnson lost his oil early in the race, taking out Perkins (Holden), who in turn took out Johnson’s teammate Crichton...
The fastest Holden was out, and later Grice and Percy retired too, while Brock blew his engine, moved to the second team car and was third in the end - but after the disputed disqualification of the Sierras for using illegal fuel, they won the race. Best M3 was the car of Richards and Longhurst in the black JPS car.
Later, the fuel allegations were reversed, but a protest from Gardner’s team over the dimension of the wheel arches was confirmed just before Fuji.
