Sunday's Group A round, the first in this year's Trimoco trail, saw Frank Sytner take his maiden victory in a series he has supported for the last three years. The Nottingham BMW dealer had not even considered the race seriously before half distance, treating the outing as a taster to see whether he wanted to follow the series this year! The up to 2500 cc class fell to Graham Goode's self run Nissan Bluebird Turbo, minus its intercooler, and this was just reward for the pleasant Leicestershire man after the legal wranglings and disappointments of last year. Behind the Nissan were hordes of Alfa GTV6s which enlivened the midfield, and further back the Escorts in Class C were joined by three of the new 16 valve Toyota Corollas. In the early stages this looked like the dice of the day although series newcomer Richard Belcher was an easy class victor in his ex-Longman Escort having been forced to start from the pit lane. Only 15 cars took the start and they became mighty strung out round the three miles of Silverstone by half distance. More cars are desperately needed to maintain the series' reputation as the premier saloon category, but those who score now will be well served when the series reaches its latter stages. Even the lure of the TV cameras could not attract more than just 18 drivers to Silverstone's International Trophy meeting Group A support encounter, the first in this year's Trimoco series. (MN)
