Imagine this situation. Last week you sealed your third consecutive British Saloon Car title in front of a Grand Prix crowd. This week you have another race, the last of the season, but the title is yours so you can tootle round and enjoy your day. That is, of course, unless your name happens to be Andy Rouse. With the championship tucked safely away into his pocket it was a relaxed Rouse that drove a battling race with Dave Brodie for the full 15 lap race distance at Silverstone. Both men took turns at leading in a wonderful battle but, at the flag, it was the ICS Sierra turbo of Rouse that took the honours. Quite some distance behind came another battle, this time between the two Rover Vitesses of Neil McGrath and Dennis Leech, the latter finally coming out on top. Class B went the way of a delighted Rob Kirby after the only other class rivals, Richard Longman and Jon Dooley were eliminated by an accident and mechanical failure respectively. The smallest class saw Richard Belcher take his Ford Escort to the line first although, after practice, it was the Toyota Corolla of Geoff Kimber-Smith which led the way. It was the battle for the lead, in one of the best group A races this year which held the attention though and showed how worthy a champion Andy Rouse is. (MN) |
