During the first eight laps of Sunday's Grand Prix supporting race, the Trimoco British Saloon Car Championship realised its full potential with a superb display of close action up front. Win Percy's Hughes of Beaconsfield Toyota Supra and Andy Rouse's Industrial Control Services Rover Vitesse circulated nose to tail until Percy, who had dominated practice, was involved in a contretemps with John Myerscough's little Alfasud exiting Paddock. The result; a broken wheel rim and punctured left rear tyre which robbed everyone of a race to remember.
James Weaver's CC Racing BMW (GB) CSi chased Rouse to the flag but to no avail, the Rover's superior handling as assertive as it has been all season. Behind Weaver in third, and at last scoring points, was Dave Brodie's BBW Colt Starion. The Brode had managed to squeeze Weaver out on the first lap at Druids but then succumbed to tyre delamination, which drastically affected the car's handling. Vince Woodman returned to the series after a layoff of some three races and duly took fourth with the second BMW (GB) car, while Mike Newman's enthusiastically driven Capri took fifth ahead of Class B winner Phil Dowsett in the first of Terry Drury Racing's Alfa GTV6s. Class C once again produced most of the action with championship contender Richard Longman losing out to Chris Hodgetts after an earlier coming together with team-mate Alan Curnow. (MN)
