The yearly Norisring race had fine weather (as usual) and a good entry (as usual) which for once reduced the sorry state of the championship.
The distance of 60 laps could bring some of the cars in difficulty - it would be uncertain if the tanks would be big enough for the whole distance.

Division 1
Entry was much better than usual, though some of the regulars complained that these foreigners stole their points and money. Sure.
These foreigners were people like Moretti (bringing back the Joest Moby Dick), John Paul Jr with the IMSA Mustang (money race only), Piquet and the GS M1, Quester a similar car from Sauber, and Mass drove another Joest car, last years one with some 1981 updates.
The race was a thriller. Initially, Mass led, but after 19 laps a pulley came adrift and now Wollek was ahead, closely followed by Stuck and Winkelhock. Three laps to the end, Wollek came in for fuel - but he had vapour lock instead; he was out. Seven laps earlier, Stuck had signalled to his pits that he might come in for fuel as well. But he kept going, and was helped by Winkelhock, who fell back with brake troubles, allowing Moretti through in second - and if the Italian had understood Jöst’s sign to increase turbo pressure, he might even have won! But would the Schnitzer M1 reach the finish? Yes it did, the team was ecstatic; a fine revenge to sponsor Lubrifilm, who had stopped paying weeks ago and whose decals were removed from the car.
The group 2-4 class was again won by Henzler.

Division 2
Ludwig had irritated his competitors by driving a few laps in division 1 practice; he had to get some feeling for the wider tires allowed in the one-class “money race”. He came away with a warning. Heyer was overjoyed by his practice, only 0,3 seconds behind Ludwig. Heyer took the lead in the race, and finally could beat Ludwig. The Trophy vclass was won by an Audi this time, Lilier beating Wolf after Selzer retired.

Norisring Trophäe
The money race (”no points but coins” as Hezemans used to say) had its own rules. There was a qualification race on Saturday for grid positions 1-15, 6 drivers were added according to their practice time, and the last three places were for Gernot Leistner, race director, to decide. Wollek won the qualifying race ahead of Stuck and Piquet.
Wollek took the lead and won - no tank stop necessary now, since he drove a little more intelligent. Stuck and Mass took each other out at the hairpin; Paul Jr followed at some distance behind Wollek, while his father was in the pits, his spare parts also present - but his car still in the US of A, thanks to a strike.
Ludwig nor Winkelhock could play a role in this race; the first one damaging his radiator, and Ludwig’s turbo hose broke. But there was a fight for third: Heyer, Grohs, Fitzpatrick, Moretti, Piquet and Quester - the latter climbing to third, only to end up in the pits - out of fuel! Heyer got third, and Grohs finished fourth.
