For a long time, Heyer had been in the lead of the DRM championship - and Zolder did not end that. As usual, Ertl had been fastest in practice, and usual as well is that he retired, this time in lap 1, after he stood on the gas for the rolling start perhaps a bit too forceful. Heyer had been on P2 during qualifying, but he couldn’t win the race against Stuck since the blue GS car was unlucky while lapping other cars - and his brakes left something to be desired as well. So Stuck had a lucky win, he was quick to admit.
In third it was Soldeck, his best race of the season, and 1,5 seconds a lap quicker than in March - but he was lapped anyway, while Niedzwiedz had trouble with the fuel injection system, pitted and fell back.

First touring car ever under 1.30 minutes in Zolder was the Porsche of Winkelhock; a shattering 1.29,67 for pole, though Ludwig was hardly slower with 1.29,82. The Kremer K3 of Fitzpatrick was way behind in third: 1.31,46, exactly the time Ludwig clocked in 1979 - and then it was pole.
Ludwig had a bad start, so the order became Winkelhock-Fitzpatrick-Ludwig, with an ever increasing lead for Winkelhock. When Ludwig rolled out with a blown engine, it seemed to be an easy Sunday for Winkelhock, but no: Winkelhock’s car fell back in a cloud of smoke and oil, and before he could be black flagged (and that was a long time) the engine gave up altogether. Fitzpatrick won the race, with Wollek second (both cars covered in oil) and a happy Dören third.

Trophy notes: Selzer won division 2 for the fourth time straight, Hamelmann second for the third time. Early points leader König had another miserable weekend: his engine expired in lap 9. The Division 1 race had more excitement: Kelleners, “Bald” and Schreiber battled to the end.

The support race was won by Redeker after he survived a touch of Vanierschot, his old Alpine colleague.
