What a shame it was that the BBC chose not to televise the Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship race at Thruxton last Monday. Apart from providing relief for the casual viewer from single-seater racing, and also serving to display the progress being made by such newsworthy teams as the Akai-Audi and Rover equipes, it also provided by far the most exciting race of an otherwise fairly unremarkable day's sport. Apart from the mechanical and personal interests, there was also a fine battle for the lead, before one of the protagonists became involved with a slower car during lappery. In short, the race would have made ideal viewing. In the end, Gordon Spice scored yet another clear victory with his Ford Capri; Win Percy dominated his class and spent the entire race dicing with the two Rovers; Richard Lloyd scored a last lap victory in the 1600 cc class; and Alan Curnow swept up the smallest division. Before that, though, following Vince Woodman's excellent start that saw him take the lead from the outside of the front row, there was some very entertaining motor racing. |
