Since both Heyer and Stuck missed qualifying (they were both in Donington for the first Procar race of the year) they had to start from the back of the field, which included Ludwig but now with a normal rear spoiler. His appeal had failed, costing him the first two races but not the win at Hockenheim.
It was a difficult decision which tyres to use in the race; Jöst, Kremer and Loos decided for wets, Zakspeed and Lancia for slicks.
The grid was, for the first time, combined for the two divisions, which did not help Plankenhorn especially; apart from 5 division 1 cars Ertl was in front of him as well, courtesy of the wet practice.
Heyer’s car lost a spark plug right after the start, but despite this he sliced through the field to an eventual fifth overall. But in front it was Stommelen, who lead the field after the start, as so often this year. But from behind came Stuck, 40th after the start but 7th after lap 1! In the lead was now Ludwig, on slicks, while the Porsches fell behind - they had to change tyres. Ertl came in as well, but retired with a broken turbo.
In lap 3, Stuck was second, passing Dören and Merl with ease, while Niedzwiedz nearly had a collision with Stuck but recovered. Stuck heft him behind and set off for Ludwig, passing him after lap 6. But on the long straight to the finish Ludwig had enough and overtook again, winning the race and his division. Stuck was second with Wollek third.

For the rennsport trophäe it was won by Schurti (BMW M1) but full points went to Lässig, too with a BMW M1. The small division was won by Selzer on wets; his luck was that it started to rain again at the end of the race, otherwise slick-mounted Hamelmann would have won.
