When the flag fell, this memorable race was started: first division 1, 3 minutes later division 2. Another flag would have been welcome some 18 kilometres further, a yellow one with red stripes - but alas it wasn’t given - since the track was flooded. Ludwig, leading and Stommelen, second, got away with it (they left the track but did not hit anything) but Plankenhorn crashed into the barriers - on both sides of the track, with front and rear of the car, and when he wanted to leave his car Dören crashed as well, and Wollek had fallen victim of the weather as well - he went straight on into the armco.
Stommelen was in the lead after lap one, with Ludwig second despite a missing spoiler and a battered underside. He dropped back when he pitted in lap 2.
Winkelhock was a happy second, and was soon leading in the BMW M1 when Stommelen had a puncture - the latter fell back to third behind team mate Merl.
Winkelhock had been starting under appeal since he overtook under yellow in practice and was disqualified from the meeting - some time after the race the appeal was rejected and Winkelhock disqualified after all, ending the sensation that a group 4 car won division 1 overall.

In fact, the overall win was now for a division 2 car, if you exclude the 3 minute distance. The winner was Ertl, who had been hampered by a lot of problems in practice. Fastest had been Stuck, and he took the lead after the start but soon fell back when his engine ran only on three cylinders. The lead was taken over by Niedzwiedz, who passed Ertl and Heyer as if they were amateurs but then his gearbox stuck in first - out! When Ertl’s throttle stuck for a while, Heyer took the lead but the order was reversed when the throttle came loose and Heyer’s car lost power with a damaged turbo.
