Germany’s prime touring car event at the Norisring had, as usual, fine weather - until the 200 mile race...

Division 1
Loos thought his misery was over when Wollek clocked pole with his uprated car, which now had the air/air intercooler like Stommelen and Ludwig. The start however was won by Ludwig, Wollek followed closely - too close for comfort really, his oil temperature rose to 150 degrees and he lost power; in lap 10, he retired. Schurti took over, but he ran into temperature troubles as well, and had to let Fitzpatrick pass. Stommelen was unlucky too; he had to pit for suspension repairs and lost 8 laps. The “race within the race” for the BMW M1s was won by Stuck after Lauda retired.

Division 2
Höttinger’s car was now in fine shape, good handling and lots of power - what could go wrong? He got pole, albeit with a small margin over Heyer.
He took the lead after the start, shifted to second gear - and did not find it, nearly coming to a standstill with Winkelhock right behind! Heyer escaped and had a big lead, Winkelhock followed, closed right in and watched as Heyer needed all of his skills to stay ahead, with Winkelhock waiting for the error. Not a driver but a mechanical gremlin occurred: the distributor gave up, as so often. Heyer had to give up. Dauer, in the second Sachs car, came in with a damaged front (”Braun pushed me off”) and it became clear that this was not a Ford day when Ertl retired with the same distributor problem.
In the meantime, Höttinger had climbed to second again, though unable to close in on Winkelhock. Pirelli drivers Grohs and Ketterer retired too, but it was a BMW whitewash when Winkelhock crossed the line, followed by no less than 8 other 320s.

200 meilen
105.000 Deutschmarks at stake for the 7 fastest qualifiers from both divisions - and a heavy shower fell over the Norisring just before the start. Herbert Schnitzer wanted to start on slicks, unlike driver Winkelhock. But the old fox was right. Apart from Winkelhock, Höttinger, Brun, Ertl and Heyer made the same choice, the other started on rain tires.
After the start, Wollek came in with massive oil loss and retired, and from lap 4 onwards cars came in to change tires. Heyer was in the lead now, with Winkelhock close behind - again. Stommelen, who had changed early, started a fantastic hunt through the field while Ludwig retired with suspension problems. Heyer had another distributor failure - and while the rain stopped and the clouds lifted, it did not so above the Capri of Ertl, who blew his engine in a big way. Stommelen could fight down Winkelhock easy, like Fitzpatrick who finished second, but a third place for a division 2 car was a great result anyway.
