The race had a promising entry. Quester was partnered by Vittorio Brambilla; a new Luigi car was available for Xhenceval/Dieudonné; the two Jaguars were driven by Fitzpatrick/Schenken and Rouse/Bell. But there was this problem. Jaguar already lost two engines in practice - with the same oil surge problems as had driven Zakspeed mad the previous year. Alpina's Bovensiepen and Indra lent a helping hand by supplying the same solution as themselves had used on the immaculate green coupé. After the start the Fitzpatrick/Schenken Jaguar, who started from pole position, took the lead and disappeared into the distance - but after a little over an hour the engine cried enough - the car had ran its bearings. The Alpina couldn't take over - it was already in the pits; no oil problems here, but a blown head gasket. The new Luigi car then? No, that was retired after only two laps with a holed piston. The only contender for overall victory was now the '76 Luigi car which was sold to Finotto, who was partnered by his old mates Facetti and Grano. |
