Two Luigi cars at the start, and one of them won: Luigi dominated Group 2 racing in 1976, including this race which all saw as the ideal preparation of the 24 hours later this year. The second car retired, but it was well worth noting that its engine had already 30 hours under its belt. The polesitter, the BMW of Peltier/Carlier, took the lead after the start, but after lap one the two Luigi cars took over and a lap later the Serge Power car disappeared altogether, while the Camaro of De Sauvage/Bovy stopped at the pits. Behind the Luigi pair it was the Capri of Blackburn/Tricot in third, but he was soon passed by the BMW of Detrin. The Capri retired later, while the Alfetta of Dini/Belli climbed to fifth (behind Poole) which turned to fourth when the Detrin BMW stopped for fuel but later retired with a broken transmission. The Luigi cars refuelled too, but while Finotto/de Fierlant rejoined the race the second car stayed in the pits and was retired. Finotto was in the lead now, followed by the Alfetta with the Commodore of Wauters/Martin in third. The Luigi car now had a lap in hand over the rest of the field, and when the Alfetta broke down, second place was for the Commodore with the BMW CSi of Bourgoignie/Lierneux in third. |
