This was the second round of the 1976 ETCC. The entry was a little better than Monza; to compensate for the missing Jaguar, Leyland sent a Dolomite Sprint with the pairing Bell/Hobbs. Despite a carburettor ex-rally engine, the car was little slower than the Zakspeed Escort. The latter one was supposed to have its oil surge problems fixed; on the other hand, the very fast Menden Scirocco of Fröhlich/Mohr had a big engine failure in the qualifying session. Luigi had brought three BMW this time, who occupied the front of the grid. After the start, the BMW took the lead, followed by the Zakspeed Escort, the Dolomite and the Scirocco, who passed the spectacular driven Leyland car soon after. Tire problems prevented the McMahon Escort of mixing with the big boys. Zakspeed had troubles, too: a broken oil pump meant the end. The Dolomite had a valve rocker replaced but retired soon afterwards. The Luigi BMW lessened their pace, and while Nève was supposed to let by team leaders Xhenceval and Dieudonné, the young Belgian was not prepared to stand down. Behind the 1.6 Scirocco in fourth position, the Autovama Alfetta took fifth spot. |
