No turbo Lancia nor a turbo BMW were here (it was thought that the BMW’s gear train would not last the distance at the Nürburgring - probably justified...), but the Porsches were there, complete with new water-cooled intercoolers which were within the rules. The flat nose stayed on the works car.
Apart from the works and Kremer cars, 934/5’s were entered by Haldi, Kannacher and Evertz. When Loos thought about it, it became clear that his 934 (fourth on the grid!) would become even faster with bigger wheels and a rear wing. So his group 4 car was modified during the night, probably the first time that a car trained in one group but raced in the other.

Though Schurti clocked 7.37,0 with a car not even adapted to the track not all was all right at Porsche - the engine could have been damaged with this ride. Kremer complained that the new intercooler system made his engine difficult to adjust.

But after the first hour of the race it all seemed to work out fine. Stommelen had a huge lead, even while lapping in 8 minutes flat. The Kremer car was only just ahead of the BMW brigade while its front spoiler was damaged. After the first pit stops in lap 8 disaster struck the Porsche camp.
The works car was stranded at “Flugplatz”, the Kremer car had a broken drive shaft.
The cars were repaired on the spot, with materials shipped from the pits, but of course both cars were disqualified.

Now the Hermetite BMW was in the lead, followed by the Faltz car and the Schnitzer car. The Kannacher- and Loos 934/5 were able to match the pace, but little more.
But BMW ran into troubles as well. First, de Fierlant left the road - due to a damaged suspension, it appeared. The Hermetite BMW led until three laps before the end - then the engine broke. The Schnitzer car took over, and memories of past races came up; three times, the car had been in a good position but never finished. But this time it did - it won with nearly four minutes in hand over the Loos 934/5; third was the Max Moritz 934, winning the GT class. In division 1, the Schnitzer 2002 won while the Zakspeed Escort retired - both cars had a big rear spoiler; shades of things to come.
