No turbo Lancia nor a turbo BMW were here (it was thought that the BMW’s gear train would not last the distance at the Nürburgring - probably justified...), but the Porsches were there, complete with new water-cooled intercoolers which were within the rules. The flat nose stayed on the works car. Though Schurti clocked 7.37,0 with a car not even adapted to the track not all was all right at Porsche - the engine could have been damaged with this ride. Kremer complained that the new intercooler system made his engine difficult to adjust. But after the first hour of the race it all seemed to work out fine. Stommelen had a huge lead, even while lapping in 8 minutes flat. The Kremer car was only just ahead of the BMW brigade while its front spoiler was damaged. After the first pit stops in lap 8 disaster struck the Porsche camp. Now the Hermetite BMW was in the lead, followed by the Faltz car and the Schnitzer car. The Kannacher- and Loos 934/5 were able to match the pace, but little more. |
