It was a soaking wet affair at the high-speed track of Talladega. Hans Stuck himself reports.
“Gregg surprised us all with a new long tail Carrera. It was very fast in practice, only 3 tenths slower than my pole time. Practice had been dry, but in the first laps of the race it poured down. I felt fine about it. But after 11 laps, the chequered flag dropped, the finish of an 11-lap sprint? It was only a pause, it should have been red flagged of course.
After some discussions (some of the gentlemen did not want to continue) the race was restarted, but darkness was setting in. Even less comfortable were the spectators on the infield.
In my BMW coupé I had a puddle as well, so the mechanics drilled three holes - but this worked the wrong way; I had three fountains now, because of the fact that an IMSA car has no side windows. The air stream in my car pumped water into the car, and the front window misted instantly, the fan clearing only 30 quare centimetre. I could see the braking points more or less, and watched more and more cars spinning on the banking - since most of them did not want to drive on the highest point. Not very smart, since the water was mainly at the bottom... Dunlop engineer Glotzbach had told me that I could take the banking flat out despite the water. It worked, although I ended always very sideways. Neerpasch liked it, a following Camaro driver not since he took the same line as I - but at a much slower pace. His car dropped down.
In the last laps (I could see the score board, and that showed the race was not over yet) I got a puncture - I went into the pits, but the mechanics did not move. They only smiled - and then someone told me the race had already finished - 5 laps ago. They had no way of telling me.
Gregg finished second on 29 seconds, and is in the lead of the championship. Sam Posey was only sixth here, since he had a stop to dry his car - he did not like the fountains at all!”
