Sensationally, a Camaro was still in the lead two laps before the end. Farmer Carl Shafer had a whole bunch of Carrera’s behind him but then it was gone: Haywood outbraked the Chevrolet in the hairpin (which was fighting with Gregg - who damaged his suspension in the process) and the normal situation of a winning Carrera was restored. An honourable second place for the Camaro was all that was left.

The weekend had not been kind for the striped BMW. Stuck was at home sick, Redman took the lead in the 40-lap final. But after ten laps, the engine cried enough. Not unexpected, since the head gasket was damaged in the first 50-mile heat. No reserve engine was available - one had been lost in practice. So the car was sent into the final with fingers crossed - but it did not work out that way.
