The entry list showed the usual two works BMWs and the Alpina duo, but no Schnitzer car this time. In the opposite corner, three works Capris and the unique Broadspeed car. A few local Camaros and a Mustang completed division 1. The small class was contested by a bunch of Escorts and the inevitable Autodelta GTAms, the last works outing for these cars. As usual, the Silverstone race was divided into two heats of two hours each. Gardner took the lead, followed by Ertl, Stuck, Hezemans and Mass. When Muir lost his front spoiler, Glemser braked but Rouse who was following close was too late and crashed into Glemser’s rear. Glemser spun and hit the wall into retirement. The second heat saw Gardner retire after yet another tire gave up, so now we had a battle for the lead between Mass and Quester, then Bell and Fitzpatrick (on 5 cylinders). Ertl’s lead from the first heat was now reduced to 19 seconds, with Quester closing the gap each lap. But three laps from the end, Quester was gone: he had run out of fuel, a miscalculation from the team. So he missed victory and second place in the championship. Still, a deserved victory for Alpina, and a championship for Hezemans and BMW. |
