In division 2, favourite was Menzel in the Zakspeed Escort, whose practice time was good for division 2 pole and second overall. Main opposition was Ertl in the Alpina 2002, while Christmann in the Opel GT was third fastest. Some more Escorts (although Wooding was far from ready - Struckmann had to do with an ex-Safari rally car) and 2002’s provided a good field.

Division 1 should be the Hans Stuck show; just like Jochen Mass in 1971, he should win the title this year with his up to date works car. The opposition from Porsche proved too weak; Kremer did not turn up, Fröhlich was slower than last year, despite 50 HP more and a faster track; Schickentanz tried but decided to give it a miss on Sunday. So apart from the only competitive BMW of Joisten, who had to start way back because of various problems, the competition came from Ford; Fritzinger and Paul Neerpasch brought ex-works 1971 cars, still on 13” wheels. Mass (who was here anyway for F2) nearly destroyed the Bulova car in Saturday’s free practice, trying to find the best set-up for the softly-sprung Engeman car.

35 cars minus Odenthal (she started from the pits after a while) took the Indianapolis start with Fröhlich in the lead - but a 1-minute penalty was his after he jumped the start. Soon, Stuck took over, followed by Menzel, Fritzinger, Ertl and Basche. Westbury retired soon with ignition problems, but had witnessed an incident: “Engeman braked surprisingly hard just in front of me, I managed to stay clear but Christmann behind me was rammed, a few cars spun.”
Christmann and Ridder retired on the spot.

Fröhlich was touched by Ertl and retired as well. After lap 2, the order was Stuck, Fritzinger, Menzel, Ertl, Schütz (Capri), Joisten, Nakaten and Engeman. After lap 3, Hegels retired, while Fritzinger could only just stay ahead of Menzel, the final order was reached in lap 4. A fine victory for Ford, with new team director Kranefuss in charge for the first time.
