The fast Monza circuit,despite its new chicanes, should favour the De Tomaso’s. Four of them were entered, the fastest one of Herbert Müller, the Swiss driver claiming pole - but damaging Janda’s car in the paddock. Fitzpatrick was second fastest, another De Tomaso third. Müller was fast off the mark but locked his tires in the first chicane, lost time and Fitzpatrick took over, followed by Bonomelli, Kretschi (Corvette), Ekberg and Haldi. But Müller came back, claiming the lead in lap 7 and building up a huge lead - until he had to retire. Fitzpatrick claimed another victory (and the championship in the process), while Bonomelli came second after outbraking Kretschi in the very last lap. |
