The entry list was promising this year. In the small class, we had two Autodelta Alfa Romeo GTAJ’s, four works Abarth 1000 TCs, and a trio of Fiat 128s by Filipinetti. For the next two divisions, Ford seemed to have its act together this year. After a disastrous 1970, the new RS2600 would be the car to have, and for division 2 they had the new Escort RS1600 16-valve car. Two Capris and one Escort RS - the competition would come from BMW (two pair of 2002’s by Alpina and Koepchen, two Alpina coupés, virtually unchanged since last year and a Belgian coupé) and Alfa Romeo (two GTAms with a little more power and a weight increase from 920 kg to 970 kg, following a change in the homologation weight, and privateer cars like the German Hähn car with an Autodelta engine). Outsiders were Opel (one Steinmetz Commodore, not yet with the crossflow engine but instead with a spare engine of only 235 HP) and Chevrolet.

But the first race of the season brought neither the Capri victory Ford hoped for, nor a class win for the Escort. After the indianapolis-style start, the Camaro spun and lost contact to the leaders. The second-placed car of Marko/Mazet had to stop because of overheating (but it kept going at least), Quester’s Alpina coupé came in with ignition trouble, he had lost a few laps already, but this was soon repaired and he went out again, only to leave the track at the Parabolica. Manoeuvring, he got trapped in the sand, losing more time.

After two hours, the order was Soler-Roig, Fitzpatrick, one lap down Zeccoli and Hoffmann, two laps down Hezemans and Betzler. Larrousse, third initially, had lost his front screen, and after the rear window was removed as well, he gave up, and while Huber tried for another two laps the car had to be retired, no neck muscles able to withstand the wind force on the straights.

At the end of the third hour Glemser/Soler-Roig blew a head gasket and retired. The fast Escort, now in the lead, spun during the third hour and was passed by Hezemans as well as Facetti, who retired later however. But Mass fought back, and took over the lead again. With only 20 minutes to go, the Escort got a puncture and the slow journey back to the pits cost them dear - they were only fourth overall in the end.

So victory went, a bit unexpected, to Hezemans with Quester/Basche in a BMW 2800 CS in second.
Filipinetti, with its new Fiat 128’s for division 1, lost all its engines during practice and race; the Abarth works brigade, part of the ETCC for so long, did not even take part - they were withdrawn, a consequence of the dismissal of the 1000 cc class. So the victory in division 1 was for Autodelta.

Italian championship - Division 1 (under 700 cc)
At ten in the morning the first race took place. 24 cars on the grid, 8 per class, with Magri on pole. He had a good start, and formed a leading quartet with Mazzeschi, Garrone and 595 of Audisio. After four laps, Mazzeschi retired, as well as six others while Magri stayed in the lead, with Scandale now second overall in his 590 Giannini with in ninth the other class leader, “Sugar” in his 500 Giannini. After six laps Garrone had disappeared, but more important was the sprint of Guidici who stormed thropugh the field and finally took the lead in lap 10 and stayed there to the end, with Magri second and Scandale third, winning the 600 class.

At 11:00 it was time for the second race, again with 24 cars. Campanini (Abarth 1000) took an early lead, followed by the 128 of Cozzarolo, Ravinale and Stefanelli, both Abarth 1000. Soon the retirements begun: Stefanelli came slowly into the pits with a flat tire, in 850 Gatti rolled his car after the front suspension collapsed. Gunnella took over the class lead and took it to the end of the race. Campanini and Ravinale were still leading, creating a vacuum behind them.Cozzarolo (128) destroyed its gearbox leaving the way open to a class win for young Cerulli. In the end, Ravinale managed to cross the line a little ahead of Campanini.
