Tension for Hezemans in this home round for him. He was still in the lead of the championship, but Abt was closing. Hezemans had not scored in the last two rounds and was on 39 points; Abt was on 31 now and talks were that Abt would get his points back from Silverstone and Spa after all since he appealed at the FIA.
So Hezemans decided to try a start in division 1 with an Abarth - nothing new for him. But his car was not available; the alternative was a start with van Staalduinen’s car. Unfortunately, this car did not survive practice with broken pistons and crankshaft.

To Hezemans’ chagrin, Abt had an easy victory. Last year’s winner Dijkstra retired shortly after the start (head gasket), and Leeuwenburgh retired a little later.

The standings were now 40 for Abt, 39 for Hezemans. He had to score this race, since Jarama would be another easy one for Abt.

After the start of division 2 and 3, Hezemans took the lead from pole, followed by Glemser (Capri), Picchi, Chiotakis and Facetti (Alfas). The group remained in this order lap by lap. But it could not last. Suddenly, Picchi and Glemser spun simultaneously at Hunzerug, after a little touch from Picchi. Glemser damaged a rim and had get the wheel replaced at the pits.
So Hezemans led, Chiotakis second, but we were not even halfway yet. Things looked great.
But then Hezemans’ car misfired up the Hunzerug, and reached the pits after a slow lap. Out of fuel, very unexpected. He resumed in 9th position. But only seconds later he crashed into the fencing, after a broken conrod. The title looked out of reach now.
For the Dutch fans there was still something to cheer: Chiotakis was still in the lead, 16 seconds in front of Picchi. But poor Chiotakis was blocked by Glemser, who opened a gap at the fast “bos uit” section but closed the door suddenly. Instead of lapping Glemser for the second time, he went into the straw bales. He could continue and promised Glemser revenge - Glemser probably thought he had blocked Picchi, teaching him a lesson for the earlier incident. Now Chiotakis made trouble with Glemser at the Hunzerug, a grin on his face when Glemser spun yet again.
So Picchi won, followed by Facetti.

In division 2, more bad luck for the Dutch drivers: Lubin, who had been in the lead of division 2, blew a head gasket, team-mate Engeman fell back with fuel pump problems. Tonny Zwaanenburg, fighting with van Oorschot’s NSU TT all the race, decided to take “bos uit” sideways but he ran out of luck and rolled his car. Victory in division 2 went to last-minute entry Marko in the Alpina BMW.

After the race, it was thought that a wave of protests would be issued - but when Ford decided not to protest against winner Picchi, Autodelta and the DNRT could tear up their counter-protests.
