It was difficult to contain the front row of the grid on the modest Crystal Palace starting area. Looking rounded and insignificant between the squat angular bulk of Sears' and Gawaine Baillie's Ford Galaxies, Roy Salvadori's Jaguar had nevertheless equalled Baillie's time in practice and the crowd were looking forward to a more equal struggle on this small circuit.
Jack Sears took an early lead in his Galaxie from the Jaguars of Salvadori, Aston and Hill, and despite the difficult nature of this twisty course, proved absolutely uncatchable. Hill took Aston on the first lap, but for a change, Roy Salvadori held off Graham Hill. Baillie's Galaxy followed in fifth place for a couple of laps and then passed Aston.
Alan Hutcheson's Riley sounded rough and was outclassed in this company, slowing gradually until it pulled into the pits and retired after five laps, surprisingly with brake trouble. Among the backmarkers Richie Ginther in a Cortina was having a neck and neck battle with Harwell's 3.8 Jaguar and nearly got through on the 11th lap as the cars accelerated past the pits. Jim Blumer in the Allan Andrews Cortina stayed in front of Harwell to win the 2-litre class. Albert Powell (Jaguar) had his bonnet come adrift but carried on. Young abandoned his Cortina at Bottom Straight.
In the separate Small Car Trophy race for the up to 1300 cc class, eleven Minis took on Anita Taylor's Ford Anglia. Whitmore led from start to finish. Two other works Mini-Coopers driven by Paddy Hopkirk and John Rhodes tried to make it a 1-2-3 for the works. However, Christabel Carlisle was equally determined that this should not be and put her Mini-Cooper between Hopkirk and Rhodes on the last lap.
