Hawthorn was first away in one of the new 2.4 Jaguars and lead for 2 laps until “ominous smoke” poured out the tail pipe as he was rounding Stowe.
Bueb in the huge Mk VII Jaguar was trying all he could just to stay ahead of Wharton in the works backed Austin A90—which appeared to be faster around the bends but just ran out of steam on the straights. This battle lasted for the entire race and kept the crowd, already thrilled by Moss’ win in the Vanwall in the main race, on its toes.
Hamilton worked up to 3 rd place, passing Frère’s Mk VII. John Coombs faired less well in his 2.4 having to stop for water…
Parnell in the two tone Borgward just lead Foster’s works Magenette; the German car was much more stable whereas the M.G “rolled and plunged” through the corners .
The two stroke DKW’s made easy work of the small class Scott - Brown being his usual spectacular self!
