IMSA reached its maturity with a 6-race championship schedule for GT and Touring cars. Some Trans-Am entrants were taking part, leaving Trans-Am behind. Competition between Corvettes and the inevitable Porsches was expected - and delivered. First overall champions were Gregg and Haywood.
